Although the Pensmith Shoppe now houses unique, beautiful custom oblique pens, and other custom made items, it was originally a carriage barn.
The shoppe is located in the beautiful and wild mountains of New York state, where you can still see the flickering of candlelight in the old glazed windows, when the evening shades of night start to appear. Although now equipped with more up to date tools for the pensmith, the smell of wood smoke coming from nearby and the exposed old wooden beams are a reminder of days gone by.
To create these beautiful one of a kind calligraphy pens, the master pensmith first decides on the colors and pieces that look the most beautiful together; then hand turns each piece of individual wood and/or resin to a pleasing shape. This must be done slowly to insure that each pen is even and balanced. After this process, the calligraphy pen is polished often up to a dozen times, all by hand. This is a slow, laborious process, but it is done, so that each pen has a high gloss finish, not only aesthetically beautiful, but also protected from normal use.
